Tourism and creative industries represent powerful engines for economic diversification, cultural influence and international visibility. Côte d’Ivoire benefits from exceptional natural and cultural wealth, including a diverse coastline, protected national parks such as Taï and Comoé, forest reserves, waterfalls and UNESCO sites like Grand-Bassam. Abidjan has become a cultural metropolis, leading francophone Africa in music, cinema, fashion, dance, design and gastronomy. Before the pandemic, 1.7 to 2 million visitors were received annually, mostly business travelers, but the country is now seeking to expand leisure, ecotourism and cultural tourism.
Economic Contribution
Tourism contributes 4 to 5% of GDP and generates more than 450 billion CFA francs each year. Hotel infrastructure has grown rapidly, with international chains increasing their presence in Abidjan and secondary cities. Creative industries generate several hundred billion CFA francs in annual value and offer employment opportunities to tens of thousands of youth. Ivorian music is a cultural powerhouse across Africa, and the country is positioning itself as a central hub for audiovisual production and entertainment.
Outlook
Authorities aim to transform Abidjan into a major regional destination for conferences, festivals and corporate events. Coastal development strategies target Assinie, Grand-Bassam and Jacqueville as high-potential leisure destinations. Ecotourism in national parks is being revitalized through conservation programs and improved access. Film, audiovisual production and digital content creation are expected to expand with better training facilities and stronger intellectual property regulation. Enhanced air connectivity and global marketing campaigns will elevate the country’s international profile.
