Overview

Mozambique’s energy sector is one of the country’s most strategic assets, supported by large hydropower resources, expanding renewable energy potential, and strong integration with the extractive sector. The country hosts one of Africa’s largest hydropower facilities and possesses significant solar and wind resources, while energy infrastructure development is closely linked to mining and gas projects. Despite substantial generation capacity, domestic electricity access remains limited, reflecting gaps in transmission and distribution networks, particularly in rural areas.

Economic Contribution

Energy plays a critical enabling role across the economy, supporting industry, mining, agriculture, tourism, and services. Installed power capacity exceeds 3,000 MW, yet national electricity access remains below 45%, highlighting structural disparities. Energy projects generate employment in construction, engineering, and maintenance, support regional power exports, and enable productive energy use, while off-grid and renewable solutions contribute to rural electrification and local economic activity. 

Outlook

The outlook for Mozambique’s energy sector is favorable, driven by continued hydropower expansion, renewablea renewable deployment, grid development, and integration with gas-to-power initiatives. National priorities focus on expanding electricity access, strengthening transmission infrastructure, and leveraging energy resources for industrialization. Investment opportunities exist in hydropower expansion, solar generation, transmission networks, and off-grid solutions, positioning energy as a key enabler of long-term economic growth.
