Overview

Tourism is one of Tanzania’s most prominent economic sectors, supported by world renowned natural and cultural attractions. The country hosts iconic destinations such as Serengeti National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar and Selous Game Reserve. Tanzania is consistently ranked among Africa’s top safari and adventure tourism destinations. The sector spans wildlife tourism, beach tourism, cultural tourism, conference tourism and luxury travel.

Economic Contribution

Tourism contributes approximately 17% of GDP and is one of Tanzania’s largest sources of foreign exchange. The sector supports over 1.5 million jobs directly and indirectly, particularly in hospitality, transport, tour operations and handicrafts. International arrivals exceeded 1.8 million in 2023, generating more than USD 3 billion in tourism receipts. Tourism plays a vital role in supporting small businesses and community based enterprises, particularly in rural and coastal areas.

Outlook
Tourism growth prospects remain strong, supported by improved air connectivity, diversified tourism products and rising global demand for experiential and eco tourism. Government targets aim to attract over five million tourists annually by the early 2030s. Expansion of high end lodges, conference tourism and cultural heritage circuits is expected to sustain growth and foreign exchange inflows.
