Mineral resources are key pillars of Togo’s economic vision. The country has long been a significant phosphate producer, with annual output exceeding 1 million tons. Additional minerals including limestone, clinker, manganese and various metallic ores offer opportunities for diversification. In energy, Togo is expanding domestic power generation through gas, solar and renewable mini-grids while reducing dependence on imports from regional power pools. The government aims to position mining as a driver of industrialization and to achieve universal electricity access through renewable energy expansion.
Economic Contribution
Phosphate exports generate substantial foreign exchange and support thousands of jobs. Mining contributes around 5 to 7% of GDP when including downstream cement and clinker production. Energy-sector investments have increased national generation capacity and supported rural electrification efforts. The solar plant in Blitta is one of the largest in the region and plays a key role in renewable-energy development. The sector contributes significantly to fiscal revenue, industrial competitiveness and export growth.
Outlook
The government plans to modernize phosphate mining, attract new investors into manganese and metallic mineral exploration and develop local processing facilities to increase domestic value creation. In energy, Togo aims to achieve more than 50% renewable energy penetration, expand rural mini-grids and modernize transmission infrastructure. Gas-to-power projects will reduce electricity costs and support industrial activity in zones such as the PIA.
