Overview

Morocco’s agri-food and agriculture sector is a strategic pillar of national development and a priority for private investment, driven by large-scale modernization programs and export-oriented value chains. Under the Generation Green 2020–2030 strategy, the sector is transitioning from climate-dependent primary production toward higher productivity, irrigation efficiency, agro-industrial integration, and market-oriented farming systems.

With diverse agro-ecological zones and one of Africa’s most developed irrigation infrastructures, Morocco has built strong value chains in fruits and vegetables, citrus, olives, cereals, and agri-food processing. The country is a major supplier of fresh and processed agricultural products to European and regional markets, supported by advanced logistics, cold-chain infrastructure, and compliance with international quality and phytosanitary standards. Increasing emphasis is placed on water-efficient technologies, digital agriculture, and climate-resilient practices.

Economic Contribution

Agriculture and agri-food play a central role in Morocco’s economic and social structure. The sector contributes approximately 12-14% of GDP, depending on climatic conditions, and employs around one-third of the national workforce, making it a key driver of rural incomes and food security.

Agri-food exports represent a major source of foreign exchange earnings and support strong linkages with packaging, logistics, storage, transport, and food processing industries. The sector increasingly generates value through processing, branding, and certification, strengthening Morocco’s position in global agri-food value chains and creating opportunities for private investment across production, transformation, and distribution.

Outlook

Morocco is well positioned to further modernize and upscale its agri-food sector. Government priorities focus on irrigation efficiency, water resource management, productivity gains, agro-processing development, and youth entrepreneurship in agribusiness.

Strategic investment opportunities lie in export-oriented horticulture, food processing, cold storage and logistics, sustainable irrigation systems, agri-tech solutions, and value-added branding. Supported by a stable policy framework and preferential access to European and African markets, Morocco offers a competitive platform for scalable and export-driven agri-food investments.
